Comparing Double Chin Treatments: Kybella Vs. Micro Liposuction

A double chin can alter the appearance of your entire face–and it can be a blow to your self-esteem, confidence, and self image. Unlike some other parts of the body, it is difficult to engage in specific exercises that might help improve the chin area, and while general weight loss might help, many people with healthy BMIs still have double chins.

At the Surgical Arts Centre, we offer two specific procedures to improve the appearance of double chins: Micro liposuction and Kybella. In this post, we will look at both options.

Kybella for Double Chin Reduction

Kybella is an injectable, non-surgical treatment that eliminates fat under the chin. A synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, this FDA-approved prescription drug destroys fat cells in the chin area, which are then absorbed by the body.

Most people need 2 to 4 Kybella treatments to get the results they are looking for. Each treatment consists of a injection session that lasts about 30 minutes. Before the injections, ice or a topical numbing treatment may be used. In the days after a Kybella session, swelling will be noticeable for about three days and could continue for a month. Results take a few weeks or months to fully appear and will last for an extended period of time. However, patients should understand that the aging process will continue and that significant weight gain may affect results.

Micro Liposuction for Double Chin Reduction

When our patients come in asking about double chin solutions, many hear about the options and choose micro liposuction over Kybella. Micro liposuction uses just a slightly larger needle to extract fat from the area under the chin without the use of a prescription drug. The results are immediate and only one session is needed.

Micro liposuction uses a light intravenous sedation, which, unlike Kybella, requires patients to take a day off of work to recover. Following the procedure, patients must wear a chin strap for 48 hours, and then overnight for two weeks (this aids in the healing process). However, also unlike Kybella, there are less side-effects related to swelling, feelings of fullness, or areas of nodularity.

Like Kybella, micro liposuction is long-lasting, though aging and weight gain could affect results over long periods of time.

Micro liposuction and Kybella are comparable in price, though patients requiring multiple Kybella treatments will spend more than those who choose micro liposuction.

Who Is A Good Candidate For These Double Chin Procedures?

Both Kybella and micro liposuction are great choices for those who are seeking to minimize the appearance of a double chin or to improve their profile. These treatments work best on those with moderate to severe fat under their chin.

These treatments do not work as well for those with deeper levels of fat or those with a significant amount of sagging skin under their neck. We are available for consultations to discuss procedures that would be more ideal for these patients.
